Families change so quickly it’s only natural for parents to want to regularly document these milestones and achievements through photography, especially in the early years. So I am often asked by parents ‘How do I get a good photo of my children’. Here are some tips to help you achieve that perfect portrait;Make sure the children are not tired or under the weather; this way you get the best of their little personalities shining through.
Get the children used to you and the camera by taking lots of shots first.
Get down on your hands and knees to stay level with your subject, to appear less intimidating.
Use your camera’s red-eye reduction setting (if it has one) when taking flash photographs.
Don’t ask them to sit and smile, engage them in an in activity, play peek-a-boo or even dressing up in their favourite costume.
Make them laugh; a good raspberry always goes down well!!
Keeps the camera rolling!! BE READY because it’s usually after they think you’ve taken the shot you want that they relax and bingo there is your picture!
Most compact digital cameras will have a few seconds delay between the time you press the shutter and when the image is recorded, so try and anticipate what will happen in the scene in front of you to compensate.
Have fun!! Once you have the camera, taking digital images costs you very little. If they are no good just delete them and try again.
If all else fails call in a professional!!
